The small business must also be able to demonstrate a significant degree of dependence on internal sources of finance and operate at least six months a year.

Interestingly, the SBA goes on to define a small business as any firm or organization that meets these qualifications. Interestingly, this list excludes such heavy-hitting mega-corporations as Apple, Microsoft, Walmart, CitiBank, Costco, Yahoo, AT&T, Philip Morris, General Electric, Daewoo, Morgan Stanley, Boeing, Union Carbide, Merck, RBC bank, Enron, and WorldCom. In fact, the SBA states: “The Small Business Administration recognizes some limitations in defining small businesses, including the absence of an official definition for small businesses and the variety of criteria used to determine eligibility.” Unfortunately, this definition does not take into account the many opportunities that exist for today’s small businesses.

The fact is that today’s small business is much more capable of doing business in the international marketplace, as well as being much more accessible to a larger number of potential customers. Further, these small businesses have fewer barriers to entry, meaning that competition is much greater, and they can usually offer lower prices. This means that even companies with a small market share can compete with larger firms in a number of markets, increasing their overall profitability. It also means that smaller firms can offer products and services that are not available to traditional large firms.

The small business is also much more globally mobile. Although they do not have a presence in every corner of the globe, they are more global in their scope and influence. They are far more competitive when it comes to raising the necessary capital needed for growing and expanding their operations. In addition, smaller firms often have access to more resources and more innovative and cost effective business tools, such as software. This means that they are able to make technological improvements to their operations that will ultimately yield significant cost savings, increased productivity and competitive advantage.

However, one must be careful about what exactly is meant by the small business employment definition. A good way to ensure that a definition is as accurate as possible is to look at definitions that have been published by industry publications over the years. Industry publications tend to focus on aspects of a specific industry that is likely to impact employees directly and indirectly in terms of finding work and increasing productivity. A good industry publication would focus on specific industries, such as communications or technology, which will have direct applications and a number of employment opportunities. Such publications would also recognize other important aspects of a small business’s existence, such as customer service and innovation.

A good publication will provide information on the selection of industries that are likely to have a positive impact on employees, as well as providing information on those industries that are less likely to have an impact. It may even define a subset of industries and provide further details for selected characteristics associated with the industry, such as skills, flexibility, and innovation.
