If you want to be at your best, you need to take care of your health. Here’s how.
The life of an entrepreneur can feel like a grind. There’s always another goal to pursue, a person who you’re committing to help, a new partnership to build. With so much on the schedule, it can be easy to let even something as important as your health fall off your radar.
It’s important not to forget we each have one body to carry us through life, and even though we rely on our brains to power our businesses, our mental performance will suffer if we don’t keep our body healthy. We need to build our physical capacity to keep our energy, focus and resilience high.
Michael Morelli understands this well. Viewed as the wellness guru of the digital age, Morelli is the founder and CEO of multiple successful wellness brands, is a best-selling author and has a mission to end obesity. Here are five tips Morelli recommends to get your health on track—and raise your game in all facets of life.
1. Anti-inflammatory diet
Morelli is one of many health experts who assert that a healthy diet isn’t as simple as counting calories. His book, The Sweet Potato Diet, features the sweet potato as a focal point because it is one of several foods that prevent inflammation buildup in the body.
Morelli recommends, “Stick to foods such as; lean meats, nuts and seeds, little fruit, some starch, lots of veggies — the closer to nature the better. And use a greens supplement like Detox Organics™️ to ensure you’re body is getting a healthy dose of nutrient dense plants high in anti-inflammatory properties.”
Not only is cleaning up your diet good for your physical health, but you may notice an impact on your energy levels throughout the day, and your ability to focus.
2. Get moving, in bursts
A common excuse people make when avoiding exercise is that they don’t have time. The idea of carving out an hour to go to the gym seems unmanageable for anybody with a full calendar. The good news is there are plenty of exercise options that not only take less time, but in many cases yield greater benefits.
The solution is high-intensity interval training, or HIIT workouts. With this type of exercise regimen, you can get all the activity you need to be healthy in just 20 minutes a day. No matter what your fitness goals are, a HIIT workout can give you all the activity you need in a short time.
If you aren’t sure where to start, there are plenty of apps to give you instruction and routines to follow. Morelli recommends HIIT MAX®, which is available in major app stores and can get you on the right exercise schedule today.
3. Hydrate with intention
It’s easy to forget about our water intake. Some people only drink it with meals, or when they feel noticeably thirsty, and many offset their water consumption by drinking dehydrating beverages such as soda, alcohol or coffee.
Morelli uses the same formula as top performing athletes like New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady: take your weight in pounds, divide it in half and drink that many ounces of water. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water, or about nine cups, each day.
Dehydration isn’t just physically unhealthy, it will affect your mental performance as well. Symptoms include fatigue, irritability or inability to focus, which will slow you down before you even realize there’s a problem.
4. Build valuable relationships
Famous leadership expert Jim Rohn said, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Everybody knows that healthy, fulfilling relationships are a key to a happy life, but Morelli notes that it is part of our health as well.
Though we all have long to-do lists and crowded schedules, it’s important to make time for others, to give to others when possible, and to invest in healthy relationships. Gravitate towards people who share your core values and who make you feel energized when you are with them.
Conversely, it is just as important to politely distance yourself from people who drain you of your energy. Doing this will leave you mentally sharp and motivated to be your best.
5. Schedule meditation time
Top performers like Morelli are proactive about making time for things that make them healthier, and that includes scheduling time to meditate each day. A 2010 study in Consciousness and Cognition Journal found that mindfulness and meditation relieve anxiety and depression, and improve cognitive ability.
Morelli swears by the impact of meditation, saying, “Meditation takes practice, but once you get it, it’s maybe the best thing you’ll ever do for your business and you.”
Make time during each day to practice meditation. I personally like to do it first thing in the morning as part of my morning routine—and it makes me feel energized and focused to start the day.
Physical and mental health don’t happen by accident, but Morelli is a great example of what is possible when you dedicate time and attention to being healthy. Try these tips, improve your health, and boost your performance in all facets of life.
