The more industries grow, the more they produce a “long tail” effect and create more niches. Search “flashlight” on Amazon and you will get over 50,000 products. What’s a long tail product or niche category? Perhaps a waterproof wearable headlamp for exploring in caves. In other words, as certain service or product categories grow, you might think they are done in terms of opportunity but you have to look harder. Here are ten industries that will continue to produce long tail products.
Subscription Boxes. Subscription boxes continue to be a popular niche for ecommerce companies. In fact, the market for subscription products and services has increased by more than 100 percent a year for the past five years. Because the subscription market has expanded, you’ll need to focus on a niche within a niche. For example, staples that households typically shop for (think local food and beverages, specialty cookies and snacks, organic toiletries that are replaced regularly, etc.) are very popular, and the market isn’t yet saturated with them.
Super Niche Health and Wellness. For this niche, think about gluten-free products, specialty teas (matcha tea is on the rise), and exclusive detox products. Green tea and its variants are the fastest growing tea category in the world. Vitamins and supplements continue to be a hot trending niche to sell as well, with perhaps personalization driving this category.
Mattresses. This might not seem like it belongs on a list of niche products for ecommerce, but the boxed mattress trend is growing online. And there is still room in the market to carve out your own niche. This is a product that would be ideal if you want to start a drop shipping business. Storing and shipping mattresses can be costly, so having them sent from a manufacturer or supplier directly to your customers can be easier and cheaper. Focus on underserved or special needs customers.
LED Lighting. It’s expected that nearly all lighting will convert to LED lighting within the next few years. That means the demand for this niche will continue to grow. Currently, colored LED lights and smart LED lighting (controlled by smart devices and apps) are both niches worth considering. Look for niches in certain rooms of the house or outdoors.
Organic Sun/Skin Care. The natural and organic trend will only grow and eventually take over the generic sunscreen brands. A better niche might be to target certain people with extreme or problematic skin conditions. Bringing in certain natural ingredients might give you an edge in this category. Pomegranate skin cream anyone?
Natural CBD Treats for Dogs. This category will grow rapidly. For anyone who has ever owned a dog, you know what it means when they are stressed. Drooling, running around, pacing, etc. CBD treats that can calm our dogs down will be much better than pharmaceutical or homegrown remedies.
Bamboo Anything. Bamboo has nothing but a positive reputation when it comes to the environment. It grows quickly, it doesn’t need pesticides or much water, it pulls carbon dioxide out of the air and it can be used in a nearly unimaginable range of products. There are now bamboo shirts, skirts, socks, underwear, furniture, floors, paper, plates, sheets, towels, plates, bowls, spoons, kitchen utensils, keyboards and cleaning wipes. Look for something that could be replaced with bamboo.
Reusable Sandwich Bags. For environmental reasons, it’s pretty obvious that switching to waste-free packaging is a smart idea. A few plastic baggies a day might not seem like a big deal but over time those bags add up to major pollution. One stat you may not have heard: More than one million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide. That’s crazy! Chemicals from plastic can leach into your food – especially food that is oily like cheese or when the plastic gets warm. A re-usable, recycled washable bag is such a clear choice.
Special Needs Cosmetics. Mass cosmetics are not created for the special needs of some users, they are for the lowest common denominator. So customers with skin conditions and harsh skin problems turn to niche beauty products for treatment and reassurance. One brand that restores the confidence of people with vitiligo is Zanderm. Another is MiSMo Body Care that sells body and beauty products for people with highly sensitive skin including rosacea.
Natural Nutritional Supplements. These are and will always be in demand. But consumers are increasingly looking for better solutions. Because of this, they’re looking for natural supplements to improve their immune system and overall health. The next niche trend might be personalization where a simple saliva test can reveal exactly the type of supplements that would be perfect for your body.
Entrepreneurs, it’s not about ideas. Look at a large category of products or an industry being disrupted and find your long tail solution.
